It's almost that time again!  This year we won't miss the State Fair of Texas and despite the drought, our girls are getting ready!!  Just look at that muscle on our little heifer calves!!

Here he is...~2 weeks old and growing!  Given the extreme heat and drought, this little guy spends most of his time sitting under the trees but when he does grace us with his presence, he's a good looking boy! 

Rumor has it that he might go to the State Fair of Texas, depending on the final head count....nothing like starting that show career early!!

Weaning can be a rude awakening for the babies but they seem to adjust pretty well after a couple of days. Little Annie Oakley has decided to cope by adopting Shiraz as her new hero and surregate mother.  Where ever Shiraz is, you will find little Annie.  Here she is joining Shiraz for some dinner.

It was finally time to wean Pearl, Belle and Maximus....and wow, did the mooooing keep you up at night.  Two nights later the good news was there was no more moooing....the bad news was the gate had been left open and the babies were back with their mothers!!  Take two...weaning again....this time the babies were on to us so it required moving the entire herd to the paddock, securing the babies and then taking the adults back to the rear field.  Shiraz was a good sport about the new additions but made sure to stay between them and her new addition (see

Today Mr Dexter left MMH to start his own herd....we wish him well and hope he enjoys the green grass and cooler weather...and don't forget to send that rain south!!

At long last and despite weeks of 100+ degree weather, Shiraz gave birth to a healthy (and small) baby bull yesterday!  During the nightly patrol, we came across this little guy.  Stay tuned for more photos....

Well, its common knowledge that this is the worst drought in Texas for decades.  This leaves the MMH minis dreaming of last summers wading pool and green grass!  Green grass is just a mirage in this heat.  Its hard to believe this time last year, the herd was spending most of the day wading in the pond like hippos....this year, its quite the opposite - the wading pool is dry!  We supervised the addition of troughs several weeks ago and now its mandatory....the minis have no other option!
