Little Chesie gave birth today to a beautiful Wyatt heifer!! We love when our heifers calve without assistance and are such good mothers! Alex decided we are naming her "Rosie" (most likely after the cartoon Cailou's little sister), although his first choice (EVERY TIME) is "Alice"!!
That's pretty much all you can hear around here these days.....mooooo, moo. These are the sad calls from the recently weaned calves for their mothers (who happen to be just on the other side of the fence). Most of the mothers are happy for their new found freedom....only Miss Daisy, the oldest and most tired of the girls, continues to stand at the fence. One must admire her devotion. She did an amazing job raising little Dolly!
This morning we arrived to check on our latest addition only to find her mother, Abby, had passed away overnight. She was an older cow that never seemed to pick up after her trip south from Colorado. Her last act was to give birth to her calf....we took the baby to our vet for a check up and to ensure she was stable. After ensuring she had received Colostrum before Abby passed, the vet gave her a clean bill of health. And now the bottle feeding adventure begins..... |
