HAY DAY!!! 07/25/2010

Picture
Hay day finally arrived...one day it will pay (but until then, the mini cows have plenty to eat this winter!  After narrowly missing a rain storm, we were able to bale and get all of the bales picked up just in time.  It was a hot day so I stayed inside (yes - once again!) but my friends Little Dog and Madison wouldn't miss the action.

TJ's pool... 07/24/2010

Picture
TJ is taking full advantage of the amenities around here.  He has decided that that the pond is his personal pool and spends an amazing amount of time up to his neck in cool water.  He doesn't seem to mind that he can't see the bottom (or what else might be swimming with him)...as I mentioned yesterday, I steer clear if I can't see the bottom.  I prefer the cool clear waters of the "real" pool but don't tell TJ!

Making Hay... 07/23/2010

It's that time of year again and it looks like it will be a good hay crop!  The big tractors came by several weeks ago to weedkill/fertilize and the rain has been perfect.  As you can see, Max and Madie are ready and waiting for their new hay crop....I like it because the short grass is much easier to run through - I don't like walking in long grass as you never know what's underneath (ie snakes!).  I may be a big bloodhound, but I don't like things that slither!!

The 'General' supervising....
I have decided its time to start implement some structure around here!!  As you saw earlier this week, my "reserves" aren't quite ready for battle.  They seem to get easily distracted....and coming from me, that's something!  Not quite sure what I am going to do to change that, but I am working on some new training routines....its not easy when there are 6 little ones and one never knows when they might be called to duty!

like pigs wallowing...
I was getting nervous when I couldn't find the herd in the back field. Imagine my surprise when I came across this sight tonight!!  The cows were up to their necks and were in no hurry to get out....that is except for Alice, who wouldn't miss her cubes for anything!

I almost called in the reserves to join in the search....but as you can see below, they were "busy"!

2010 heifer calf
Once again it looks like Sugar has produced another winner!  This little lady is a Feb 2010 calf and it looks like she is Houston/Austin bound next spring.  I overheard MMH cattle won't be at the State Fair in September due to the impending birth of the human baby but we'll be back in full force by next spring!

Even my photos look hot!  The summer heat has kept my adventures brief and these days I am relying on my friends Little Dog and Pudge to keep me informed more and more (I supervise from the cool air conditioned comfort of my bed).  However, that being said, I did take a minute to admire our little bull calf this afternoon.  Maybe TJ and Elvis have a young friend joining the bull field?!?

Halter time... 07/10/2010

Picture
This weekend was halter time....and someone was not too happy about it!  Unfortunately, I was left to witness from afar - apparently my little friends (Peggy, Blackie, Pinkie, Lulu and crew) are not very helpful.  They have not adopted my laid back, supervisory approach to the mini cows.  I hear the Madie's bull calf not only looks good but has a great personality!  Unlike last year's bull calf, he is very friendly and doesn't mind the halter too much.  As you can see, his sister did not have the same outlook!

On our nightly patrol this evening, Pudge found my old friend "santa bear" (oops....guess I did leave it in the field!). The good news is santa bear won't end up inside a hay bale!!  Pudge was quite proud of herself and refused to give it back to me even thoug its almost as big as she is!!  Just goes to show, you still have to watch your "friends"....maybe Max will be my friend - he seems to do anything for those cubes!

Millie
Turns out Max is quite the ladies man.  Madie was immediately taken with him and Millie isn't shy either.   He may only be visiting for a few weeks but hopefully Max will leave a lasting impression (in the form of two calves next spring!).  Maybe I should take some lessons from him....my "girls" just ignore me!
